Special 2008 Project: Staff Housing
It is customary for a health care facility in a country such as Bangladesh to provide housing for its medical staff and families. On November 28, 2006, Lutheran Health Care Bangladesh broke ground for the new Staff Housing Project in Dumki. The new facility will provide apartments for doctors, nurses, support staff and their families. With the medical staff living onsite, our patients will have the best care immediately available without delay. In the past, LHCB has had two skilled female doctors leave because of the lack of onsite housing for them and their families. The new Staff Housing will allow LHCB to recruit, train and retain qualified and dedicated medical personnel.
Poul Bertelsen (MSAADA Architects) has been an integral part of LHCB since its beginning with his design of the hospital, outpatient clinic, Calvary House, and now the design for the new Staff Housing Project. During previous construction projects, missionaries from the ELCA had been present to monitor progress of the construction projects. With those missionaries no longer living on site, LHCB-USA has retained Poul as a consultant to provide overall supervision during the construction project to ensure best use of materials, resources and talents allowing the project to stay within budget. He visited the project site in August 2006 to help in the preparation and bidding process, and will visit again regularly as work progresses. The projected completion date is May, 2008.
Those who will directly benefit by this project are the medical staff and families who will live in the new Staff Housing and the patients of LHCB who receive care from these dedicated men and women. With continued growth and development of our medical staff, we will provide improved health care and well being for the entire community of Dumki and surrounding villages.
